NJ State Board of Dentistry Clarifies CE Requirements

Apr 30, 2024
The revision clarifies the eligibility of online/virtual/distance learning courses as they relate to license renewal for dentists, dental assistants, and dental hygienists.

The New Jersey State Board of Dentistry posted revised Continuing Education Requirements for Dentists and Dental Auxiliaries to their website on Friday, April 26.

The revision clarifies the eligibility of online/virtual/distance learning courses as they relate to license renewal for dentists, dental assistants, and dental hygienists.

NJDA Members should note that continuing education courses that are presented online/virtually in real time and are synchronous (the instructor and registrant interact with each other) are considered the same as in person courses.

Courses that are offered online but are recordings (material is not presented in real time) are considered "electronic media distance learning" and must include a post-test to be counted for credit. Board regulations cap electronic media distance learning (online/remote) coursework to one half of the minimum number of hours required to renew a license or registration for a biennial period.   For dentists, this means that no more than 20 hours per period may be earned by electronic media distance learning.
