Medication Access and Training Expansion Act
The MATE Act is a federal law requiring controlled substance prescribers to complete 8 hours of one-time training on safe controlled substance prescribing as a condition of receiving or renewing a DEA registration. The requirement applies to all DEA registration submissions
(Schedules II, III, IV, and V).
What You Need To Know
- The 8 hours of training must be completed whether it is a doctors initial registration or a renewal registration—beginning on or after June 27, 2023.
- Training does not have to occur in one session. It can be cumulative across multiple sessions that equal eight hours of training.
- In-person and virtual training is acceptable.
- Previous education (up to 20 years) can be applied.
