What is Give Kids A Smile?
The Give Kids A Smile® (GKAS) program, launched nationally in 2003, provides underserved children with free oral health care. Each year approximately 6,500 dentists and 30,000 dental team members volunteer at local GKAS events to provide free oral health education, screenings, preventive and restorative treatment to over 300,000 children.
FAQs
How can I help children in my area receive treatment through GKAS?
Please check back in December for a schedule of participating locations. Make copies and distribute to children ages 12 and younger. You probably already know children in your school or program who are in need of treatment. You may also wish to share GKAS information with your school guidance counselor, municipal health officer or agency social worker.
Can GKAS come to my location?
Dentists are not able to provide treatment in a school or classroom setting. You may ask a dentist to provide oral health education at an assembly at another time, but this is not the same as receiving a screening and treatment in an office setting.
How do I make an appointment for a child?
Parents or caregivers are asked to make the appointment for their child. Parents can take their child to any office they choose, but they must make an appointment. Please emphasize to parents and caregivers that keeping the appointment is important!
Can I bring an entire class to the dentist?
You may be able to make arrangements with a dental office to bring an entire class. However, the dentist may not be able to provide a full range of treatment for each child in need. To arrange a field trip on GKAS day, call the office of your choice to discuss the possibility. Remember that each child must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian, in order to receive treatment.
How can I share information about this program with families in my school or agency?
You are encouraged to share NJDA's list of participating locations (available in December) by photocopying and handing it out, posting it on your website or sending it home in backpacks. Or, refer the family to this website!
