The component society meeting package consists of the following:
- A $500.00 sponsorship fee paid to the component society by NJDA.

The Science of Whitening, Something New to Smile About
Course Description:
This program discusses the action mechanism of hydrogen peroxide and the differences between whitening and bleaching products. Strategies on engaging patient whitening discussions and the management of patient clinical outcome expectations will be explored. This course includes discussion of the implementation of an efficient, state-of-the-art whitening system empowered with advanced ionic technology that will transform the whitening experience for both the dental practitioner and patient.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain how tooth-whitening technology works
- Determine appropriate whitening treatment options for patient
- Identify factors affecting whitening treatment expectations
- Use communication skills to set expectations
- Discuss the structure and mineral content of enamel that will yield successful tooth whitening

- Devise effective programs to use bleaching as a practice builder
- Explain Ionic Technology and its implication on the bleaching process

Presenter:
Diane Peterson, RDH, M.Ed is an Academic Relations Manager for Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, covering seven states in the Northeast region of the country. She joined Colgate from Vermont Technical College where she was a full-time faculty member. Diane graduated from the University of Vermont with an associate degree in dental hygiene. She received both her bachelor’s degree and Master of Science Degree in Education at the University of Vermont. She has nearly thirty years of clinical expertise in the field combining many roles including clinician, educator, advocate, and researcher. She has developed and presented courses to student dental professionals, professional associations, dental societies and study clubs. Her focus is to provide dental professionals with current scientific research and information to assist them with making active, evidence-based recommendations in their clinical practice. Diane is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association, the American Dental Education Association, the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment, and the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society.

Debbie Fleming, RDH, MS is an Academic Manager who works with student dental professionals,academics and academic institutions in the Mid-Atlantic/Central territory. Using an interactive approach to presenting scientific data and research, Debbie has a successful track record of incorporating innovative products and technologies into dental education curriculums. In addition, she has built countless relationships with dental professionals throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition to over 25 years of clinical practice, Debbie’s experience includes faculty appointments at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Dentistry and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Dentistry. Debbie is a graduate of Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA and received both her Master of Science Degree and bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She serves on the editorial review board for the Journal of Dental Hygiene and is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and the American Dental Education Association. She has provided continuing education courses both nationally and internationally.
Precision Dentistry – personalizing oral healthcare one patient at a time
Course Description:
With its focus on disease prevention and health management, rather than disease management, individually tailored healthcare is transforming medicine. The same concept is gaining adoption as a best practice in dentistry, where it has been shown to lead to high-quality care and improved oral outcomes in patients. This program will discuss relevant aspects of patient-centered care and showcase how big data and technological advancements can help improve patients' adoption of preventative oral care.

Presenter:
Daniel Bachteler, MSc, PhD is currently Associate Director, Scientific Communications in the Clinical Dental Research Department at Colgate's Global Technology Center in Piscataway, NJ. In his role, Dr. Bachteler focuses on breaking down complex scientific information to make it more approachable and understandable to non-scientific audiences, as well as develops professional communication strategies. Dr. Bachteler joined Colgate in 2004 as Scientific Affairs Manager in the company's subsidiary GABA International in Basel, Switzerland. In late 2008, he was relocated to New York, NY, resuming his role of experience as post-doctoral research fellow at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany in the area of alcohol addiction and relapse. He graduated in biology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremburg, Germany and holds a doctor's degree from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.
Diabetes and Oral Disease
Course Description:
This lecture will begin by reviewing the definition, classification, prevalence and risk factors for diabetes mellitus (DM). Laboratory tests to identify and monitor DM will be discussed, as well as the clinical manifestations of the disease. Pharmacological treatment of DM will be reviewed. DM is the most important systemic disease that will be encountered in patients seen in the dental office, and the oral manifestations of DM will be reviewed in detail, including considerations regarding implant treatment for dental patients with DM. A new approach to identification of patients seen in the dental office who are at risk for prediabetes and DM will also be examined. Finally, the management of patients with DM in the dental office will be discussed.

- The many oral manifestations of DM.

Presenter:
Dr. Ira B. Lamster received his D.D.S. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1977), his M.M.Sc. from Harvard University (1980) and a Certificate of Special Training in Periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1980). Dr. Lamster served as Dean of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 2001 to 2012, and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2012. From 2012 until 2017 he was a member of the faculty of the Mailman School of Public Health, serving as Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management. Dr. Lamster is currently Dean Emeritus, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and Clinical Professor, Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine. Since 2015, he has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Dental Journal.
